Objective: The students will present the gist and main keys to their assigned chapter from How to Read like a Literature Professor.
1. Personal Statements: Get them from the back folder.
Key Issues: 1) EDITING and really stupid mistakes.
2) Negative statements. You have to make negatives a positive.
3) Way too casual: Contractions... I have changed my mind.
4) In conclusion... Let me list the things....
5) "You" "Your"
6) Answer the prompt!! If it says pick ONE subject, don't write about TWO. If it says 350 words, 200 is not good. 500 is auto fail.
7) Not taking it seriously. Coming across as a spoiled little kid.
8) Cliche's: "molded me into the person I am..." "I went the extra mile..." "I found my second gear..." "love baseball greater than life itself."
9) Too "creative"
10) Don't write about one thing for the entire essay, then say in the last paragraph, "even though I won't continue..."
2. Presentations from How to read
3. Perrine's Chapter 1 Outline.
