OK this lesson was about something that I really don't care about.  It is about how to get that last point for sophisticated writing.  This will happen if you are just a natural beautiful writer.  Most of us aren't so I am not concerned.

AP Lesson 25: Deconstructing Prompts

Today's lesson on AP Central is titled Deconstructing Prompts, but they didn't do that.

It was about writing a good body paragraph using a good claim, strong evidence, and deep commentary.

So for homework:  Watch the video.  It can be fast forwarded on the parts that don't apply to today's lesson.  There is alot on yesterday's essay that we didn't do.

1:  Read the prompt provided:  It's cool and pretty easy to think and write about.

AP Lesson 223 and 24 (Skipped Friday but we need to"discuss it)

Hello AP kids.  I hope you had a great weekend.  It was nice out.  A bit hot.  Hope you all know someone with a pool!  I actually jumped in mine after moving rocks around and planting some jalapenos in the garden.

So Friday I took the day off (from you all), but I still watched the video.  And there was a lot of good review for you to think about.  They just used different words than I do.

The biggest point that they were trying to make was be sure on the test to NOT summarize the piece, but to analyze the piece.

I liked what they said, the AP reader already knows the piece.  They have read it at least 25 times.  So they don't want you to retell it.

Your job is to write about what the author does, how they did it, and why they did it.

So using our TTSTCANDI Chart, you would tell which of the things they did.  That is the "what and how part," but more importantly, tell WHY they did it.  What does that "thing" bring to the text?  What does it mean at the deeper level.

OK.  So we have 16 days until the test.  Who is going to step up and really try to get that passing grade?

OK, decent lesson.  More good review.  Basically it is about writing a thesis statement that will get you the 1 point, but also set you up to write a good essay to get the other points.  Basically, a line of reasoning provides you and your reader with an idea of what you are going to write about in the body.

So the homework on the essay was an entire essay.  You can do that if you want.

Read the prompt.  Write a great intro paragrapgh that provides a thesis and a line of reasoning for an essay.

The piece is ehhh.  Not a ff\an.  But it will be good practice.  Post your answer/paragraph in the Comments below.

Weekend Venting

Hello my students.  Totally miss you all.

But my fingers are tired.  I have to type NA for all assignments that I give.  UGGGHH!!

For those of you taking the test in about two weeks, these lessons will prep you!!!

For the three of you (Juan, Val and Bri) who did the last piece.  You all did great.

So here is what I would have focused on:

Narrative structure:  It was told in Limited Third Person Narrative, through the thoughts and feelings, and in this case, memories, in a flashback to when the main character (who is now older) is remembering  an experience when he was 15.  Within that flashback, he relates his previous experiences with his father that led up to this day.

I would have then focused on the two main symbols that I saw.

Beginning:  The huge pine tree that they camped under.  It protected them as they camped.  It was huge.  Always been there.  Kinda like his dad.  I would go with that as the symbol at the beginning.

Then, the shift to age 15, when he wants to go fishing with his friend instead of his father,  that is THE COMING OF AGE point.  And the father letting his use his fishing rod, that symbolizes the point where the father basically accepts his independence and adulthood, basically passing of the torch of adulthood.  It is the most important thing to the father, and he hands it off to his son.

Such a deep piece!

So for those of you who are still taking the test but kinda chose not to do it.

Here is the prompt.  See if you see that.  I really hope that you do well on the test.  It is a beautiful excerpt.  Kind of makes me think of a teacher wanting to lead his kids...

OK it was a great lesson.  We have talked about those things 100 times.  They just used different words.

Embedded quotes are Integrated Quotes
Naked quotes are SLAP Quotes.

Keep the quotes short (I say 7 or less, they say 9 or less).

And sprinkle them throughout.  BUT make sure you say something about each one afterward.

AOP Lesson 21: Developing Claims

Hey all,

Late start today.  After a month of having no house cleaners, we decided to have it done by our awesome ladies.

OK here is the homework:  I picked a different prompt that the one that they have been using for three days.  I am bored with it and you guys need to see different things and think about other approaches.

I like it and it's pretty easy, but not too easy.

Write a thesis:

Then outline an essay using the "Order of Paggage approach that they discussed.  That is the way that I would write an essay.  Chuck the text:  Beginning, Middle, End.

Then tell:  What it does, How it's done, them Why it's done.

Ok it was a total review.  We have gone over that information with every prompt that we have looked it.

So for 50, this lesson is EASY!!!!  At the end of the lesson they give the Hawthorne prompt.  So you read the prompt and all you have to do is comment below:

1.  What does the title, author and date tell you to think about before you write:

2.  What does the context tell you that you need to pay attention to?

3.  What dooes the task tell you that YOU MUST DO?  What are some key words that you want to make sure that you include in your thesis as well as in the body??


Lastly.  Test day is 18 days away.  Have you thought about how you are going to take it?  Are you gonna write it?  Are you gonna type it?  Are you going to be able to print it and annotate?

And, since you are taking it at home, I would have my TTSTCANDI whiteboard printed out and hanging in front of me. As far as I have read, they have NOT said that this is cheating or illegal.  Now if it is, I don't recommend it.  I will look further into it.
