It is all done!

Kinda a weird day.

Gonna miss you all.  Your grades are done.  Whatever shows up in Aeries now is your grade.

You were amazing kids to teach.  You made me mad.  You made me smile.  You made me laugh.

That's why I got into teaching.

AP Last Day Before Test

Ok guys and girls,

Last day to ask me anything.

What do you need?  What else can we go over or get ready?

I am pretty darn confident that, even though we haven't seen one another for 2 months, even if you have done 1/3 of what I have put out there, you will be OK.

Let me know any time today if you need anything.  Just text me.

AP Lesson 33

OK people...  It has been pretty silent out there.

Only 4 kids did the last one.

I really have no idea who is prepared.  I know that two of you are for sure, but I really don't know what you all need to get prepared these last two days.

I am guessing that many of you are just gonna "wing it."

We that's fine.  But prepare a little.

Here is the last essay and assignment that I am going to give.

https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/apc/ap08_eng_lit_frq.pdf

Time yourself.  45 minutes.  Relax.  Look for easy stuff to write about:  Character, contrasts, imagery, etc.

AP Lesson 32: Another chance to practice an essay

Hello everyone.

It is getting so close!  Five more days to prep.  What have you done to get ready?

Have you decided how you are going to do it?  Type?  Write?  Will you print out the piece or read from a screen?  Will you have two computers going just in case one screws up?

Did you make yourself some helper sheets?  It doesn't say that you can't as far as I have read.  I would have a TTSTCANDI chart printed.  I would have a list of key words in front of me to look at:  Shifts, Contrasts, Thesis, Line of Reasoning, etc...

OK here is this weekend's prompt.  It is awesome.  And it's easy to me.  I would love to write this essay.

 https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/ap/apcentral/ap13_frq_eng_lit.pdf

Set a timer.  50 minutes.

1.  Dissect prompt:  What key words must you mention?
2.  Read the prompt:  Do you notice anything right away?  Shifts, contrasts, symbols or metaphors?  Characters, Point of View.
3.  Thesis:
4.  Quick outline to establish line of reasoning

And write.

Insights into yesterday's prompt

Yesterday's prompt with the two kids is the prompt for today too.

I would not write an entire paragraph about syntax and diction, but those can be discussed within a paragraph about a bigger topic, such as characterization and tone.

This piece and prompt seems to lend itself toward characterization and point of view to show the complex relationship between them.

It's a pretty cool piece.  It is written in (I would describe it) as an omniscient point of view, but it is different than most, because each section shows the feelings of only one character, so it is limited third person in that sense.  I would write about that.

And how each section does different things.  It seems as if teh kids are on some sort of primal hunt, scavengers from the past with the diction that the author uses to describe their actions.  But then it becomes apparent through their names and their dialogue that they are not from an era long ago.

Not only until the final shift, when the thoughts of the mother are revealed, and it becomes known that these two savage like children are only spoiled brats on a beach day outing.

AP Lesson 31: An Entire Essay

Hello folks.  Sorry I am late with this.  The last two days I have been driving signs all over Riverside and Mo Val to place in your  yards.  I had my entire first period.  Sorry second period kids.  I would have done you guys too but you were split between others.

So, AP Central had another practice exam.  We will do this today or tomorrow.  I have to grade my sophomore book reports that all came in today at the last minute!!

Here is the prompt:

 https://www.erhsnyc.org/ourpages/auto/2016/4/9/50345636/q2%20tiger%202015.pdf

If you want to cheat, it's online with sample papers.  But why would you?

If you are taking the test you need to practice.

Set a timer.  50 minutes.

Dissect prompt.

Read passage.

Thesis and outline:

Hopefully you have 35 minutes here to write.

AP Lesson 30: Another Practice:

OK, make sure you look at the post from yesterday with the AP Info Updates if you are taking the test.

I had three kids write yesterday's essay.  That's OK.  If you didn't write it, at least read the prompt and the piece and think about what you would write about.

Today's AP Lesson looks like they are going to review the piece, kinda like I am going to do right now.  I am interested into seeing what they have to say, but I will have to watch it later this afternoon.  Lots to do today!

As I said yesterday, I read the dissented the prompt first.  I noticed key words that should be used in the essay:  complex relationship between sisters and family and society.  And literary elements.

Then I read the piece.  I was specifically looking for things that would stand out:  contrasts, shifts, and lit elements.

And they stood out right away:  The contrasts between the two sisters.

The shift at the end where one of them starts to change when she meets a man.

And a great symbol:  Remember:  Spring.  Or something blooming is always a sign.  She was described in a metaphor as a "vegetable" and then, as a blooming flower.  So this is obviously a coming of age story.

So what would i WRITE ABOUT?  Characterization and contrasts between the characters.  Then the shift where the one girl changes and blooms, comes to being and feeling like a woman.

I would get a 5 on this essay I am sure.

Today's lesson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwGEnIhbFpU&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=30

I will assign something maybe later.

OK they didn't assign anything.  So, I have a prompt here.  What I would do is set up a timer.  Read the prompt.  Dissect it.  Read the passage.  Then come up with a thesis and an outline.  Then stop the timer.  How much time do you have left?  Is that enough for a good essay?  I will give you 50 points for this.  Tomorrow, I will give a whole essay again.

AP Lesson 29

OK, I am done being pissed.  Here is today's AP Central lesson.  It looks like they are doing a practice exam.

I think this is what each of you should do each day from here on out.  If they don't give a good prompt, I will find one and you can do that one instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUEuElPF5WI&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=29

I will watch it live in 20 minutes and get back to you.

By the way, I ran into one of my AP kids the other day at Stater Brothers and he asked me, "Mr. Warren, do you think I am going to pass the test?"

And I simply responded, "No."

Truth hurts, but he literally hasn't done one thing since we have been gone.  Np prep.  No lessons.  Nothing.  Well good luck with that.

OK great lesson:  It's a good piece.  It's not too hard or too easy.

So if you are inclined to practice:  Do it.  Do it all within 45 minutes.  Set up a place.  Type it or write it.  Print it out, or not.

Upload it to email in a picture or send the document, all within 50 minutes.

I will tomorrow tell you what I would write about.

I literally just 1) read and disected the prompt.  2)  Read the piece.  3)  Outlined my paragrapghs and wrote my thesis.  And according to the timer, I had 40 minutes to write!

You need to practice:  100 points.
