Allusion Notes:  Macbeth and “Out, out”

Allusion Notes:  Macbeth’s “Out, out brief candle!”

 “Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

·      Macbeth in Macbeth has a soliloquy at the end of the play when he hears his wife cry out as she dies.

·      Shakespeare is speaking through Macbeth.  He is saying that existence for each of us is only a moment of light before emptiness and darkness.

·      Before we are born, there is nothing.

·      After we die there is nothing.  Only darkness.

·      Being alive is like a brief light burning in the darkness.

·      We think we are important and what we do in life has significance.

·      But we are only a shadow that disappears when the light goes out.

 

 

How to Analyze a Poem:

Steps:

Before Reading if possible:  Look into the poet and the time period.  This may provide you with information that will help you analyze.  You can use your phone for this.

1.        Identify Form:

a.       Count and label stanzas

b.       Count and label lines if not done already

c.       Look for a rhyme scheme and identify

d.       Look for a specific rhythm (look at the number of syllables in the first few lines.)

2.       Identify the subject/situation of the poem.

3.       Identify the speaker of the poem (NEVER assume the speaker is the poet)

4.       Identify characters in the poem

5.       Find shifts in the poem (in tone, speakers, time periods, etc)

6.       Come up with a UT

7.       Identify Literary Devices

Objective:  The students will discuss Poetry Chapters outlined.

Objective:  The students will read and outline two chapters of Perrine's.

I will check and stamp all of the following tomorrow.  Must be finished for a stamp.

Objective:  The students will read and outline two chapters of Perrine's.

Note:  I will be at an all day meeting tomorrow, so this assignment will last two days.  I will check and stamp them when I return.  They MUST be complete for a stamp, and I am only counting stamped assignments in the packet for grading.

Day 91

Objective:  The students will write an amazing Q3 Essay using Frankenstein.

1.  Open up GC and open up the Q3 Assignment that I put in there.

2.  Write the essay.  I TRUST you!  I am not making you use school computers or LOCK other tabs from opening.  I TRUST YOU!  Do not disappoint me. 

3.  Make sure that it is double spaced.  Submit it.  Go to printer and print it.  Put it in the basket. 

Day 90

Objective:  The students will practice some Q3 Prompts so they know what to do with Frankenstein tomorrow.

1.  Grab the two handouts and turn in you Q3 Study Guide.

2.  Let's read some Q3 Prompts so that you understand what to do on tomorrow's essay.

3.  Complete Tone Terms on from the Perrine's Poetry 1 Cover Sheet.

4.  Bring charged computer tomorrow.

Day 89

Objective:  The students will complete their Q3 Study Form for their essay on Friday.

1.  Complete the Q3 Study Form:  Make sure it's perfect.  Submit it through GC so that I can check it for originality and Breeze it.

2.  Print it to turn in tomorrow at the beginning of the period.  You will not be able to print it after the bell rings tomorrow.  It will be considered late and only get 1/2 credit if not.

3.  We will write a Q3 Essay on Frankenstein on Friday.  Bring charged computer.

Day 88

Objective:  The students will complete a Q3 Study Form for Frankenstein

Welcome Back!  Not going to lie... I missed your smiling faces!  

I have about 10 Letters of Recs for scholarships to do today and tomorrow (you have been busy... that's good) so let me work while you work.

1.  Sit anywhere.  It is your chance this week to move seats from last semester.  I will make a new seating chart on Friday after we get all of the class changes (new students here, old students gone).

2.  Q3 Study Form for Frankenstein.  This will be due printed on Thursday at the beginning of the class.  It is worth 50 points.  It will be graded HARD (minus 5 points for each thing that is done wrong.  For example, Frankenstein instead of Frankenstein or Frankenstein.
