Objective:  The students will know important details about Hemingway to analyze his work.

2.  Write and intro paragraph for the following prompt:

In the short story, “Eveline,” written by James Joyce in 1904, the main character, Eveline, is faced with a critical decision.  Read the story carefully. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze how Joyce uses literary elements and techniques to convey the complex feelings she has on the night of Frank’s departure and the work as a whole.

Objective:  The students will analyze "Eveline."

This is a story on contrasts (two things that are strikingly different.  Opposites.  

It is a story that uses Juxtaposition:   

the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effects.

1.  I am doing Quarter Grades today.  If you have work to make up, it's due today.  I will not grade anything after today.

2.  Grendel  Q3 Study Form:  It's now time for your talk again about the internet and AI.  I am getting disappointed/mad/ragingly furious at some of you.  YOUR BRAIN and YOUR THINKING is all that I want to see on papers from here on out.  Just because you have a high grade in the class does not mean that you are learning anything.  And it will show on the essay, and the AP Test.  This is due tomorrow.  So get busy.

3.  Why do I want you to have a physical copy and close read it?  The AP Test is in nine months.  On that test you will be asked to write a DETAILED essay about a novel that you know in and out.  I picked Grendel as one class novel because it is so easy to write about and it will fit most of the Q3 Prompts.

If you don't have a physical copy with notes and highlights of the important details, do you think that in nine months you will remember Grendel?

Think about a movie you LOVED nine months ago.  Do you remember details, names, dates, symbols, etc. so well that you could pass an AP essay?

What should an intro to an AP Essay look like?

        Three to four sentences

         Name the author, the title, type of lit and time written if given.

         One line summation of the piece:  The Top of the Iceberg. 

         The thesis of your paper which states the UT if called for.

Day 19

Objective:  The students will read and analyze their next story.

You have one week from today to get a copy of Grendel.  It doesn't have to be new.  It doesn't have to be any specific copy, it doesn't even have to be a book.  You just have to have a copy of Grendel that you can read and annotate. 

1.  Allusion/Symbol Notes:  Colors.

2.  Read "How I Met My Husband: and TTSTCANDI it.  We will do title and UT together before you read.

3.  Finish the story by Monday.  You do not have to have the TTSTCANDI done.  We will work in groups to finish that on Monday after the test (another 5-10 questions).
