Objective: The students will read and analyze another great story.
1. Get out "Hills Like White Elephants." Look at the prompt. Write an intro.
In Ernest Hemingway’s short story "Hills Like White Elephants" (1927), an American man and a woman named Jig converse at a train station in the Ebro River valley while waiting for the train. Throughout their exchange, the couple navigates a delicate, high-stakes decision.
Read the text of the story carefully. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze how Hemingway uses literary elements and techniques such as setting, tone and narrative structure to convey the underlying tension in the couple's relationship and their conflicting attitudes toward their shared future.
2. Discuss story and what you would write about.
3. Close read (very lit nerd-like) "Cat in the Rain."
