AP Friday (I am taking a sick day)

Hello everyone.  I am not assigning an  assignment today.  I need to do some catch up on my other two classes.

So today I am just going to watch the AP Lesson.  You should too if you are taking the test.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U-JQHQDzYU&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=18

Also, I raised money for the softball game and three scholarships this year.  $1000 each.  Here is the link for the application.  Follow the directions carefully.

King Kids Vs. Cancer Scholarship Link

Also, Brianna wanted me to discuss what I would have written about on the Cherry Bomb symbol:  So here was my response to her:

Cherry bomb  symbol

On first read, I would have focused on three symbols:  Summer, the cherry bomb explosion, and the memory box hidden under the stairs.

She writes in the beginning summer or summertime five times.  Obviously important then.  Summer is a common symbol of youth, fun and freedom.  I would explore that.

Then the cherry bomb EXPLOSION.  That would be loss of innocence.

Then the memory box with the diary and cherry bomb.  Those are memories of time past that she keeps hidden, but can get to if she really digs deep within that closet with other things from other people’s past (the clothes from her father and grandfather.)

It could be a pretty deep paragrapgh.

Now am I right?  I have no frealking clue.  But I think that I can prove it in my writing.

You can too.  Just come up with something and GO with it with full belief that you are right.

And remember:  Loss of Innocence or coming of age is HUGE in the AP curriculum.  And I think that tehy will pick a piece this year that is pretty easy since we have all of this shit going on.

AP Lesson 17

Hello the 10 of you who are checking in.  I do endoy seeing your work when you get it in.  I also kinda like making random comments on your docs.

But it's not the same as seeing you all each day.

Today's lesson was cool.  I liked how Mr. Escobar started the lesson talking about what we are all going through.  He is right!

Here is the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j_trvUr2Ew&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=17

Now they are asking for a full essay for homework.  I am not asking for that.  Especially with this piece and prompt.

How about if we do this.  Read the prompt, read the piece, then outline your essay.

 https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/apc/ap04_frq_english_lit__36152.pdf

Intro with a great thesis.

Body 1
Body 2
Body 3

Brianna waned me to tell her what I would have discussed on yesterday's symbolism assignment.  I will post that later tonight (for those of you who still want to do it).  I will also post some info about three scholarships that have to be awarded.

AP Lesson 16

Here is the link:  Hopefully it works today.  They will be discussing Symbolism, which I love.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmxJaCJ3_IQ&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=16

As far as yesterday's assignment, only 4 of you did it.  And what a great piece of Prose to write about.  It was so full of great characterization that I would have enjoyed writing and analyzing it.

The four of you who did it did a good job.  Thanks to everyone else for not doing it.  (sarcasm)

OK:  Great short lesson.  And it's one that I think we have covered quite well in class.

So, here is the homework that I adapted for you to do:

https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/apc/ap10_frq_eng_lit_formb.pdf

Read the prompt.  Read the excerpt.  Then write an intro paragraph and a body paragraph that focuses on a symbol.  Try to address:  What is the symbol?  How is it described.  What is the character's response to it?  What does it represent?  What controlling idea does it connect to?

Type it out.  Try to take only 20 minutes.  Share a google doc with me and allow me to edit.  That way I can make comments right on it.

Have a great day folks.  Be safe!

AP Lesson April 14

OK today's lesson didn't work.  There are some problems obviously with the College Board site today.

No big deal.

So let's do this.  For 50 points.  Do the following PROSE prompt from 2002.

Read the prompt.  Break it down.  Read the passage.

And write a great intro and one great body paragraph where you focus on one device.

Open a google doc and share with me.

https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/apc/b_eng_lit_frq_02_10299.pdf

This will be due 4/15 by noon.

Try to only take 20 minutes to do this.  Practice people.

Full essay again tomorrow for 100.

Miss you all.  Warren

Here is the link.  I am on live watching and taking notes now.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOGOlGAxKU8&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=14

I will post the assignment in an hour here.

OK... I agree with the teachers.  You have one month left.  You need to practice writing an essay in 45 minutes.

So, make yourself an AP Practice Work Space.  Set a timer for 45 minutes.

Open up a Google Doc.  Get it ready for typing.

Open this prompt.  Read it, then read the passage.

Read the prompt again, and write!!!

45 minutes.  See how you do.

Share it with me when you are done.

100 points:  Here is the prompt.  The PROSE one!

Cool lesson on Contrasts.  Goes great with our last novel.

Watch the lesson.

Here is the prompt that they used.  This is the one that Jason had to write on and the one that I had to write on in my first year of AP training.  When I first read it, I was .... damn, can I do this???

Tuesday April 7 Lesson

Hello everyone.

Kinda bummed right now.  My kid just returned back to San Diego State after Spring Break.  I will miss him while all this crazy is happening.

And my new puppy just pooped on the floor.  He hasn't done that in weeks.  What the heck?

So in one hour it was a double smack!!!

Anyway, here is today's lesson from the college board.  It is worth 50 points.  If you watch the whole thing and do the homework well.

Looking at the same piece as yesterday.  Focusing on setting.

AP Lesson 10:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U5h1MA2ex4&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=10

Going to try something new for the homework though.

Type it into the comments below.  That way, others can see what you found.  BUT make it legit.  Don't read others until you post yours.  Let's see if this works.  Some of you are turning in great work that needs to be shared with others.

Happy Monday at Home AP kids.

Hello everyone,

Today I am starting the lessons that will actually count as assignments in the grade book.

This will be worth 100 points in the book.  If you don't do it, no big deal.  You get a NA.  It will not affect your grade.

If you do it, it will be graded.  I am not sure what it will do for your grade, but over the long haul of about 5 weeks, I am sure that they will help.

I really liked the lesson.  And the homework assignment is awesome.  Cool piece and deep.

1)  Watch the lesson on College Board:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM6pjB3Kowg&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=9

2)  Homework:  Here is the passage that they used:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mPlGkMv_GVxiR9zn3Ya2W0wFMD5fWwbH/view?usp=sharing

3.  Here is a link for the character vocabulary.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1z92-q0VwDgiCQpRQQpczOVSLGcPylaah/view?usp=sharing

Just create the grapic organizer on a piece of paper and complete.

Then send me a text with a pic:  951-951-880-4804.  Add your name to the text.

Miss ya!

College Board Lesson 8: Developing Commentary

I just finished watching the lesson for today.  The homework was an entire essay.  And I am not going to grade an essay right now, so there are no points available today.

Also, with learning the test information posted in the update below, this lesson focuses on a novel, and you will not be writing on a novel on the test.

So watch the video lesson if you like.  I thought the use of Lord of the Flies was cool.

I think the lessons from her on out will focus more on the Q3 lesson.  If they don't, I will make assignments based on my own Q3 materials.

College Board Lesson 7: Writing a Thesis

Hello students.

I had a very special surprise guest come by today in her Graduation gown.  We took socially distance pics.

Made my day!

Anyway, here is today's College Board Lesson.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uivuAXQI8Yc&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=7

Only ten of you did yesterday's lesson on Thesis Writing.  Come on people, this is your last chance to prep and get extra credit.

After Friday, we go to actual "assignments" that won't count as much to your grade as extra credit.

The puppy's cut went well.  I don't think he is supposed to be running around like he is right now...  but he is.

Hope you are all well.

I bought my first masks today.  Ughhhh!

Be safe.  Warren

College Board Lesson 6

Hey Everyone,

Here is Lesson Six.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxDKsKRnEiM&list=PLoGgviqq4845L7Yj9c1kkIfdskkaLOUzD&index=6

Not gonna lie.  I haven't done it yet.

My wife is CRAZY with this virus thing, so while she was at work, I washed the dogs, and sterilized the whole house.

My hands are fried with bleach.  My nose hairs are gone.

BUT we are clean.

I will watch it in the morning after I take the new dog to get CUT.

Yeah, that cut.

Here is the link to the lesson.

You can do the homework part of the lesson and send me a pic of your work.  It will still be extra credit today and tomorrow, but after that I have to make it an assignment (that you don't have to do), but it will help your grade, but not like extra credit does.

Sorry.  Warrem

AP Lesson 5: Plot Structure

https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-class-schedule-daily.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM289964-&rid=47051915

Hello all,

I just finished Lesson 5 and it was interesting.  They talked about a lot of things that we have done.

A good review and the homework prompt is cool.  Make sure you brainstorm that part because that might be part of a quiz.

If you know anyone in other classes that could benefit from these lessons, be sure to let them know.

Have a great day people!

AP Lesson 4: Longer Fiction: Character Complexity

https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-class-schedule-daily.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM289964-&rid=47051915

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I took the day off to read all of the stuff that the district has planned for us to do the rest of the year.

We are supposed to start online teaching in two weeks.  BUT that is too long for you to wait if you are taking the test, so I will keep offering these lessons.

I think they are better anyway.

So here is yesterday's lesson.  I will watch today's lesson when it comes out and offer a quiz.

No some of you are texting me and it IS OBVIOUS that you are just skimming the videos,  not really thinking about them or applying the info to what we have covered in class.  And that's not what I want.

If I am giving you points, I EXPECT that you think, pay attention, apply.

Miss you all...  Be safe.  Text for quiz:  951-880-4804

AP Lesson 3: Specifis Words and Phrases

Hello everyone.  Yesterday we had fewer of you participate.  It's cool, it's Spring Break officially, but you have to be bored.

Period 1:  Tatum, Sienna and Jaden.

Period 2:  Sarah, Hara, Josh. Sydney,  Micaela and Depression.

https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-class-schedule-daily.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM289964-&rid=47051915

I have been working all day in the garden.

But I just finished watching the new lesson.  It was shorter.  Kinda cool.  I like the poems that were discussed.

Text me at 951-880-4804 for three questions for 10 points of Extra Credit.  I will leave this open until tomorrow at 12 noon, because I am tired and a bit sun burnt (my wife shaved my head yesterday), so I may be in bed early!

Miss you all.  I wish we were back in school.

And you can comment below to let others know that you are participating.  Just click the "comment" thing.

AP Central Lesson 2

https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-class-schedule-daily.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM289964-&rid=47051915

OK, the new lesson will stream live in about 10 minutes.  Or you can watch later.  I have to go shopping for my parents, so I will watch later.

Yesterday we had 9 students participate:

Period 1:  Angelica, Illeana, Tatum and Briana.  (Sienna I think too)

Period 2:  Josh, Michaela, Perla and Misery.

10 points will be added to your grade.

Watch the lesson.  Don't skim and fast forward.  Spend 10 minutes on the Homework part at the end.  My questions may cover that part too today.

I am home and ready now to quiz you.  Decent lesson.  The lady talks a lot!

Take care.  Be safe.  Mr. Warren

AP Central Lesson Number 1

https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-class-schedule-daily.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM289964-&rid=47051915

I just watched and took notes.  I am pretty happy.  I covered all of that in our units.  It was a cool review though.

So, if you want 10 points extra credit for viewing it during your Spring Break (it will not be extra credit next week, I will explain that part), send me a text with your name.  I will text back with THREE questions.  If you can answer them, I will give you the points.

You will have only 3 minutes to reply to my text, so be sure that you have that time (and you are not driving).

951-880-4804.  Write your name too.

This offer is up to 10 pm tonight.

First Albert.io is in the grade. Another one coming. But check out the online class today for an optional quiz.

Here are the students who completed the Albert.io for points:
First period:  Owen, Jaden, Ashlee, Tatum, Angelica, Briana, Sienna, Sydney, Grant and Paola.

Second:  Alexis, Micaela, Emma, Hara, Savannah,
Perla, Ethan, Dylan D, Matt and Veanna.

Today's lesson from the college board streams live at 9 am.  You can also watch it afterward.

I will figure out a way to give you a quiz afterward.

Here is the info about tomorrow's AP seminar.

I will be watching.  You could too.  Then I will have a quiz on the content.  It will be points in the grade... somewhere.

Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25, students and teachers can attend free, live AP® review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. The classes are designed as a flexible supplement, aligned to the course and exam description topic structure. Available on YouTube Live, the courses:
•
Focus on reviewing the skills and concepts from the first 75% of the course. They also include lessons covering topics from the final 25% of the course; this is content that colleges expect students to know to earn credit and placement but won't be tested on the exam.
•
Are mobile friendly and available on-demand so they can be accessed anytime.
•
Can also be used alongside work you already have planned.
•
Are also available to teachers seeking to establish connections to their own instruction.
The course schedule (.pdf/456 KB) is available online, along with information about what will be covered this week. All times on the schedule are Eastern Time. We'll continue to post updates as they’re available. We encourage you to pass information about the courses along to your students.

Virus Update: Extra Credit Check

Just checking who is actually checking the webpage for info.

So I put an Albert.io out tonight.  Good for 24 hours.  Nine questions.

I will give you one more point for your final score.

In other words:  If you get 3... I give your 4.  BUT... I will look at the time you spent on it.  If I see weak participation on your part... Nope.

Virus Update 3/20

The news just keeps coming in...

I heard from AP Central today.  Tests will go on.  But at home.

Interesting!  Here are my notes:

*45 minute online exam.
*There will be two testing dates.  One early (line early April) and one late (like May)
*  There will be cheating and plagiarism technologies used.  So don't plan on having an AP test party.
*Beginning March 25, AP Central will have free lessons given by AP teachers across the country.
*The schedule for these classes will be posted later today.  Once they do, I will post it here.

Warren
Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Here is what is happening as of today:

1.  I graded all of the Othello Q3 essays.  I made the assignment worth 95 points, and graded on the tougher second quarter scale.
6= 90-100
5=80-90
4=70-80
3=60-69
2=50-59

Problems that I wish you would stop doing:
1.  If  you use a quote, use the right words.  Iago did not say, "I am not what I say that I am."
2.  Stop just summarizing.
3.  If the prompt says to pick A character.  Don't pick 2.
4.  If it says "motives" then ;list more than 1.
5.  Don't say this line is an allusion without explaining what it alludes to.
6.  The "bible" is a book.  So it's Bible and Biblical

So if we don't ever go back to school and they don't allow me to post assignments for you to do during this break, all grades are DONE for the year. What you see now is your semester grade.

Why don't we know how to punctuate the title of a novel YET??
Why are we still writing "the reader" this and "the reader" that??
Why are we still SLAPPING quotes?

Things like this... when it comes to semester grades, and you are at an 89%... will keep you at an 89%.

You will not make the same errors in your Frankenstein/Handmaid's Final Essay!

2.  "Mad Girl's Love Song" by Sylvia Plath
