Note from Warren:  Hello everyone.  I am still waiting for this incision to close completely.  Staples come out tomorrow so that should help.  I want to thank you all again for being patient and still learning.

Also, Kemi had a great idea.  If you want to do some practice essays on your own, find some AP Prompts on AP Central and write an essay or two.  Send me them and I will grade them and give you some insights.

Lastly:   I have spots left on the senior team for the Cancer Softball game.  My students usually make up most of the team.  You don't have to be a great player.  It's all about having fun the last week of your high school career.  See Mr. Pollard if you want to play.  Miss being there.  Warren

1.  I need something to grade and YOU need to practice for the AP Test... so on Thursday you will have a Q3 Essay.

Handout:  Get into small groups.  Look at all 10 prompts:  Break down each prompt and decide what you are expected to do:  key words to mention, UT, etc.  Then discuss what major work that you would use to write an essay for this prompt.  It could be a work from this class or some other major literary work.  I will pick one of these prompts for Period 1 and another for Period 5.  And you can not use notes on this.

2.  Catcher reading Chapter 10-11 and Questions.

Monday, April 17, 2023

Day 148

Catcher Reading Schedule:  Write into your calendar.  You are responsible for reading even if you are absent.

Tuesday:  10-11
Wednesday:  12
Thursday:  13-15
Friday:  16-17

1.  Discussion of Catcher in the Rye Chapters 7 and 8:  Who is going to lead our discussion today?

Discuss:  Holden asks Stradlater if Jane still "keeps her kings in the back row" after Stradlater went on a date with her.  This is a metaphor.  In checkers, what is the importance of the "Kings" and why would someone keep them on the back row?  Now, what does Holden mean when he asks this to Stradlater?

Discuss:  Holden thinks that everyone else in the world are a bunch of "Phonies."  What is ironic about this throughout Chapter 8 when Holden meets the attractive older lady on the train?

2.  Read Chapter 9 and complete handout:

3.  Tomorrow:  I need something to grade and you have to practice for the AP Test:  Q3 essay:  Make sure you know a long piece (I would know two) that you can use to respond to a prompt.  You have read Grendel, Frankenstein, Othello, but you can use any literary piece to respond.

Day 143

Warren Update:  I am home now from the second surgery.  I have a 24 hour IV hooked up, and the infection seems to be going away.  I CAN NOT come back until after my next appointment, April 28.  The best thing that you can do for me is keep working and learning.  Help Ms. Martinez and just be great kids.  Hate missing so much.  Warren

From Mr. Warren: Hello AP students.  I picked this book as your last major work because it is so easy to read and it is easy to write about for the AP Q3 Open Source essay.  It seems like a very silly book on the literal level, but it is really a deep and interesting "coming of age" novel.

Reading Schedule for the week:  You are responsible for reading even if you take another ditch day!  Quizzes will be random and sometimes worth 10 points, and there will be TWO surprise 50 pointers.  So keep up each day.

Objective: Students will complete or be near completing Othello Q3 in their Google Classroom.

Hello AP kids.  I am now home and able to work and grade.  So I want to help you with the Q3 Study Form.  I looked at a few and there are issues:

1.  How do you punctuate a play?  It's a BIG thing.

2.  Explain everything:  Don't just say a setting is Cypress.  Tell why it's important.

3.  Give examples of what you say, as you would in an essay.

4.  Themes (minus 10 if wrong).  It's a UT.  NOT one word.

5.  Explain allusions and symbols.

1: Othello Q3 Study Guide:  In your Google Classroom.  Complete and submit in google classroom.  It will be due on Thursday by 3 pm.
You have the entire period.  I will run the plagiarism check, so do not copy/paste or do not share or copy other people's work, Google can now check assignments from school to school and teacher to teacher and class to class.  Also, this is a TEMPLATE so adjust categories by adding or subtracting numbers as needed.  Since this is a play, change up as needed also.  Like Pacing elements means how the play is written (acts), etc...  I will grade this hard.  Minus 5 points for each error.

Tomorrow I know is a "senior ditch day" so I will assign TWO MC Practices for points.  Kids who show up will get 5 more points that the kids who have to make it up during office hours in front of me.

Wednesday, April 05, 2023

Day 140

Objective: Students will complete the following assignment. Turn in Othello packets to white basket.

You have two days to complete this.

Friday I know is a "senior ditch day" so I will assign TWO MC Practices for points.  Kids who show up will get 5 more points that the kids who have to make it up during office hours in front of me.
