AP Lesson 223 and 24 (Skipped Friday but we need to"discuss it)

Hello AP kids.  I hope you had a great weekend.  It was nice out.  A bit hot.  Hope you all know someone with a pool!  I actually jumped in mine after moving rocks around and planting some jalapenos in the garden.

So Friday I took the day off (from you all), but I still watched the video.  And there was a lot of good review for you to think about.  They just used different words than I do.

The biggest point that they were trying to make was be sure on the test to NOT summarize the piece, but to analyze the piece.

I liked what they said, the AP reader already knows the piece.  They have read it at least 25 times.  So they don't want you to retell it.

Your job is to write about what the author does, how they did it, and why they did it.

So using our TTSTCANDI Chart, you would tell which of the things they did.  That is the "what and how part," but more importantly, tell WHY they did it.  What does that "thing" bring to the text?  What does it mean at the deeper level.

OK.  So we have 16 days until the test.  Who is going to step up and really try to get that passing grade?

Here is the Monday Lesson link.  I will watch it at 9 am and update this with an assignment.

OK, decent lesson.  More good review.  Basically it is about writing a thesis statement that will get you the 1 point, but also set you up to write a good essay to get the other points.  Basically, a line of reasoning provides you and your reader with an idea of what you are going to write about in the body.

So the homework on the essay was an entire essay.  You can do that if you want.

Here is my homework:

Read the prompt.  Write a great intro paragrapgh that provides a thesis and a line of reasoning for an essay.

The piece is ehhh.  Not a ff\an.  But it will be good practice.  Post your answer/paragraph in the Comments below.

"The Pupil" by Henry James discusses the relationships between Mrs. Moreen, Pemberton, and Morgan Moreen. Morgan Moreen is Mrs. Moreen's eleven year old son who is ill and soon to be under Pemberton's teaching. James characterizes this triangular relationship through the use of a third-person omniscient point of view and Mrs. Moreen's pretentious tone and portraying Mrs. Moreen and her son to believe themselves as superior to the "modest" Pemberton.

In this excerpt from Henry James’ novel, “The Pupil”, Pemberton is introduced as a proper modest man who is going to tutor Mrs.Moreen’s young son. The narrator’s display of Pemberton’s thoughts and the unsettling tone emitted throughout the passage introduces the peculiarity of Morgan Moreen’s situation and his family.

The organization and diction of this passage made it so hard to decipher, hope this is okay.

“The Pupil,” by Henry James depicts a group of characters and their relationships with each other. The characters Pemberton, Mrs. Moreen, and the little boy all show different signs on who they are and what they represent. Pemberton being a poor boy shows that he is rich at heart. Mrs. Moreen being a rich girl shows she is poor at heart. The little boy who is transitioning from a rich boy at heart to a poor boy at heart is because of the wealth his mom is showing that they have. Through this passage, the author depicts these characters and their relationships in the way that he shows their social values and personal values. He shows this by using 3rd person omniscient point of view, including physical character description, through the subtle tone when speaking about Pemberton, a hopeful tone about the little boy, and stuck up the tone when writing about Mrs. Moreen.

"The Pupil" written in 1891, by Henry James tells the reader about an anxious tutor who is too timid to approach an aristocratic, wealthy woman about his salary. The arrogant woman's spoiled son disrupts the conversation they are having with his disrespectful attitude.

"The Pupil" by Henry James focuses on the relationships between Mrs Moreen, Pemberton, and Morgan. Pemberton is a humble broke young man who teaches Morgan, Mrs Moreen’s son since he is ill and therefore not fit for the school. The narrator’s display of Pemberton’s timid thoughts and hopeful tone when referring to Morgan introduce the type of relationships these people have and their moral and personal values.

In an excerpt from the opening of “The Pupil,” Pemberton is accepting a job as a tutor for a little boy, Morgan Moreen, and is having a conversation with his mother about the position. Through the third person limited point of view, it is shown that Pemberton, being the observational young man he is, picks up on the Moreens’ subtle hints of superiority over him right away, which adds to his natural timidness. This uncomfortable relationship between them and their representative social classes evolves with the use of an uneasy tone.

Jaden that is very good.
Maria, he is applying to teach, but does not teach yet. Be more specific in your thsis as to what you want to prove.
Sydney. STOP with "the reader". You are not part of the essay.
Sydney. You wrote two sentences of summary. There is nothing to prove here. Your essay. Did you watch the lesson video??25/50
Ozzy: Poor boy (he is a man) who is rich at heart (is a HUGE cliche).Mrs. Morgan is a rich snobby woman niot a girl. And what is "he little boy who is transitioning from a rich boy at heart to a poor boy at heart is because of the wealth his mom is showing that they have." Goodness. I don't really see what you are gonna write about!!!! Did you watch the lesson video?? 25/50
Bri: I think your's will be a weak essay.
Juan your last sentence is your thesis and the rest is your line of reasoning. Good.
